Project365 – Day 22

Took an old pic and edit it really quick really fast. Long work day today, no time to take a picture.

Project365 – Day 21

All the shots I took tonight did not turn out. My small tripod sucks. The wind caused enough vibrations that photos were ruined. I’m tired. This will have to do.

Post Editing Practice

I know a lot of people who say they hate post editing photos. I oddly enjoy it, it takes a ton of time and can be really tedious or annoying, but I really don’t think it’s all that bad. I do have a lot to learn though, and I definitely tend to over sharpen or put too much contrast. Practice makes perfect though, so today I decided to randomly pick a photo from the past and try to enhance it for the better.

I chose the photo I took of Grand Central Station last year in New York. At the time I still had not spent enough time learning my camera to take photos at appropriate settings so the original was dark and really not very interesting. Good thing I took the photo in RAW so I was able to get some quality adjustments done. I focused first re aligning the photo since it was a tad crooked, and cropped the photo to get a more symmetrical frame. I performed some noise reduction, increase the exposure, warmed up the temperature and did some selective brightness reduction on some of the windows (cause after the exposure increase they blew up). Last of course I sharpened (unsharp masked) the image, maybe a bit too much. It easy to spot that I over did the sharpening in some areas if notice the halos around the legs of some of the people. The detail at the very far end of the roof is also a bit too sharp, mainly because it just seems unnatural. Things far away to the human eye should not appear as sharp as something closer, and with that point in the photo being the furthest away but being the sharpest and most detailed makes the photo seem a tad odd. Just a note for myself for next time.

Project365 – Day 18

My niece and her mischievous eyes.

I liked this picture except there were a few minor things that I realized when I went in for the post edit. I took this photo at f/2.8, but I also moved way in to capture the picture. I often like to get the camera to focus on the eyes, however due to the angle and how close I got in for the photo, I probably should’ve increased my depth of field a bit. I ended up focusing on the right eye and because she was angled to the camera, the left eye which is actually in front was a tad out of focus. With the eyes being the main attraction of the photo, this bothered me. I tried to salvage it with a little bit of editing, but I still know I cheated.

Project365 – Day 17

Yet another photo from the bridge. This one I need a little opinion. I post edited the photo in two schemes, one purely black and white and increased the contrast in around certain areas. The other is roughly the same amount of contrast but I left a little color into it. I’m leaning towards the one with a bit of color, what would you pick?

Project365 – Day 16

I needed a tripod to get a better image. Still turned out not too bad though I think considering.

Project365 – Day 15

Starting a new job so Mondays will be practically impossible to actually take a photo and post it, so I’ll be posting a photo from a previous day.

Tried to change things up a little. Went for a trendy/retro/hipster look that everyone seems to post on their facebook from photos taken with their cool iphones. Might have overdid the vignetting a tad. oops.

Project365 – Day 14

I was attempting to take a photo that my sister really liked… not sure if I quite like the outcome though. Will have to try again next time.
